Celtics Firing Joe Mazzulla ‘Would Be Stark Change Of Direction’

With the Boston Celtics falling behind 3-0 in the Eastern Conference Finals to the Miami Heat, the question of Joe Mazzulla’s job as head coach as come under question.

As recently as last week’s draft combine in Chicago, sources told Jake Fischer of Yahoo that the Celtics would give Mazzulla “quite a bit of runway to grow into an elevated role on the team’s sideline.”

Mazzulla is 34, two years younger than Brad Stevens was when he was hired by the Celtics as head coach. The Celtics initially elevated Mazzulla to interim head coach following the suspension of Ime Udoka and then signed him to an extension giving him the head coach job permanently in February.

“If the Celtics suddenly reversed course on Mazzulla, it would be a stark change of direction from the franchise’s original intent to allow Mazzulla similar time to flourish in the position,” writes Fischer citing sources.
